Welcome to Rose Awareness Week 2024! From 17th June to 23rd June, we are dedicating this week to celebrating the elegance, history, and beauty of cut roses. Whether you're looking to brighten up your home, surprise a loved one, or simply indulge in the beauty of nature, this week is the perfect time to immerse yourself in all things roses. Let's explore the world of these iconic blooms.

The timeless appeal of cut roses

Cut roses have long been symbols of love, beauty, and sophistication. Their use in bouquets, arrangements, and decor dates back centuries, from ancient ceremonies to modern-day celebrations. Roses convey a range of emotions, making them perfect for any occasion - from romantic gestures to expressions of gratitude and sympathy.

Rose fun facts

· The rose is the national flower of England, symbolising love, beauty, and courage.

· Each colour of rose carries its own meaning: red for love, white for purity, yellow for friendship, and pink for gratitude.

· Roses have been a part of British culture for centuries, with references in literature, art, and history.

Popular varieties of cut roses

There are countless varieties of cut roses, each offering unique colours, shapes, and fragrances. Here are a few of our favourites:

Hybrid Tea Roses: Known for their large, single blooms on long stems, these roses are perfect for dramatic arrangements and classic bouquets.

Floribunda Roses: These roses produce clusters of blooms, offering a fuller, more abundant look in arrangements.

Spray Roses: Multiple smaller blooms on a single stem, ideal for adding texture and variety to bouquets.

Garden Roses: Renowned for their rich fragrance and ruffled petals, these roses bring a touch of vintage charm to any arrangement.

Tips for enjoying cut roses

· When you receive roses, you may notice that some of the outer petals appear discoloured or seem to be wilting. These petals are referred to as guard petals, and they serve to protect the rose. It is recommended that you let them naturally wither away, as this will help extend the vase life of the roses.

· They are thirsty flowers and can quickly deplete the vase water. Be vigilant about water levels and regularly replenish the vase with fresh, tepid water to maintain their vitality.

· Protect these blooms from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and drafts, as these conditions can quickly wilt the delicate petals and accelerate dehydration. Keeping them in a cool, shaded area is the key to prolonging their freshness.

· When preparing roses for a vase, cut the stems underwater this prevents the formation of air bubbles in the stems, which can lead to early wilting. Use sharp, clean scissors or shears for a clean cut. Remove any leaves below the waterline to prevent rot and keep the water clean.

· If your roses start to droop after a few days, you can submerge the entire rose stems underwater and recut them at a 45o degree angle. Gently shake the stems to release any trapped air bubbles. This process can help revive the roses and extend their vase life..

· Roses are susceptible to bacterial growth, which can shorten their vase life. Change the vase water every two to three days, even if it still appears clear, and add flower food to keep roses nourished and bacteria-free. Rinse the vase thoroughly before refilling it with fresh water.

By embracing the grace and charm of cut roses, we celebrate more than just a flower; we honour a symbol of love, resilience, and nature's artistry. Rose Awareness Week is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the timeless beauty and elegance of cut roses. Surprise a loved one with a bouquet of fresh roses, one of nature's most cherished flowers.

Let’s make Rose Awareness Week 2024 a memorable and blooming success!

Much love
