Caring for Spring Bulb Planters

As Easter draws near, our focus as florists shifts to the allure of spring bulb planters. We often field enquiries about maintaining these delightful arrangements, prompting us to share our top tips.

Caring for spring bulbs already nestled in a planter demands attention to watering, sunlight, fertilization, and vigilance against pests and diseases. Here's a recommended care regimen:

Watering - Regularly assess soil moisture by inserting your finger into the soil. Water the bulbs when the top inch feels dry, ensuring thorough hydration without overwatering to prevent root rot. Adequate drainage is essential to avoid waterlogging.

Sunlight - Position the planter in a location that receives sufficient sunlight for the bulb varieties planted. Most bulbs thrive in full sun to partial shade, requiring a minimum of 6 hours of daily sunlight. Periodic rotation ensures even exposure and prevents uneven growth.

Fertilization - Apply a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering bulbs once a month during the growing season. Follow package instructions to avoid over-fertilizing, which can stunt flowering.

Pest and disease control - Regularly inspect foliage and soil for signs of pests or diseases. Prompt action, such as using insecticidal soap or fungicides, helps control issues like aphids or powdery mildew.

Deadheading - Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming and conserve the plant's energy.

Support - Provide support for tall or top-heavy stems, such as daffodils, using stakes or bamboo supports secured with soft ties or twine.

Mulching - Florists usually apply a thin layer of organic mulch around the bulb's base to retain moisture, and regulate soil temperature. Avoid covering bulbs directly with mulch to facilitate growth.

This year, we're excited to present two new additions to our Easter Collection, Blue Muscari that prefers full to partial sunlight, and Tête-à-Tête Daffodils that typically prefers full sunlight, but can tolerate partial shade. Ensuring consistent moisture levels is vital for the well-being of both varieties.

By following these simple care instructions, your potted bulbs will thrive, offering beautiful blooms throughout the season. Enjoy the vibrant floral display and the warmth they bring to your home!

Much love
