Spring has truly arrived, and for us, that means one thing above all else - tulip season. Whilst we swoon over every bloom that graces our workbench at this time of year, tulips are without question our favourite spring flower. Their elegance, versatility, and incredible range of colours make them a true star of the season and we jump for joy when they start to arrive in all shapes and sizes.
We’re especially in love with the more unusual varieties. Frilly tulips, with their delicately ruffled edges, add texture and softness to bouquets and feel oh so romantic. Parrot tulips, on the other hand, are bold and dramatic, with feathered petals and flamboyant shapes that make a real statement. Each stem feels like a tiny piece of art as they continue to grow and change shape in the vase.
And then there’s the colour. Tulips offer some of the richest shades of any spring flower - deep plum purples, velvety burgundy, fiery orange, buttery yellow, blush pink, creamy ivory, and even near-black tones for a moody feel. Whether you prefer a soft pastel palette or a vibrant, jewel-toned arrangement, there’s a tulip to suit every style.
We love arranging them en masse for impact, or mixing varieties for a just gathered-from-the-garden look. As they continue to grow and gently open in the vase, tulips have a natural movement that brings life to any space with their own simple foliage.
This spring, we’re celebrating tulips in all their frilly, flamboyant, colour-rich glory. Have we gushed over them too much? Possibly. But when something is this beautiful, can you really blame us?
To get the best from your tulips follow our care tips below:
· Growing in the vase: Tulips continue to grow after being cut. Stems may bend and twist toward light (phototropism), and flowers can open further over time. Just amazing to see!
· Vase choice: Use a vase that supports at least half the stem length to prevent bending and flopping as they get a bit “top heavy”.
· Trimming: Cut stems at an angle for better water uptake and controlled growth.
· Rotate: Turn the vase every few days for even growth and light exposure - this will help straighten up the stems.
· Reviving drooping tulips: Prick the stem just below the flower head with a pin, re-cut at an angle, and place in fresh water for an hour.
· Placement: Keep away from direct sunlight, heat, and drafts. A cool, shaded spot prolongs freshness and keeps them blooming for longer.
· Water: Tulips are super thirsty; refresh vase water regularly with tepid water.
· Handling: Treat gently to avoid bruising petals or stems.
We hope you enjoy these beautiful spring blooms as much as we do!
Much Love
